Deepak Chopra, M.D., Integrative Medicine and Personal Transformation Pioneer

Have you ever seen a major spiritual influencer angry? It’s quite the sight to behold: imagine the most peaceful, spiritual, ascended person you know suddenly showing signs of annoyance, anger, and frustration. Hard pill to swallow, isn’t it?

But it’s moments like these that can help you connect with these leaders more deeply.  Moments like these show you that everyone is human, no matter who they are, and that’s nothing to be ashamed of. As you’ll see in the video below, it’s, in fact, something to be embraced.

For those of you who may not know, Deepak Chopra is a board-certified doctor of internal medicine, endocrinology, and metabolism. He uses his knowledge as a way to help people heal through a blending of science and spirituality.

He’s written more than 85 books that have been translated into over 43 languages and is a New York Times Bestseller.

He’s good friends with Orpah Winfrey and is the founder of the Chopra Foundation, “a non-profit organization dedicated to improving health and well-being, cultivating spiritual knowledge, expanding consciousness, and promoting world peace to all member of the human family,” according to his website.

Deepak Chopra stopped by on Reddit, a message board that’s home to many topic boards called “subreddits.” Reddit’s “inhabitants” (Redditors) are a unique blend of brutally honest, intensely respectable, and flat out troll-like.

Redditors can cast a vote, much like “liking” and “disliking” on YouTube, and the highest-rated content usually floats to the top of the posts.

The IAmA subreddit hosts interviews by regular people in odd or unique positions, and celebrities who are willing to risk the barrage of questions that Redditors may ask. The format is called AMA which stands for Ask Me Anything, and it really is a place where you’re meant to ask anything, literally!

So you can imagine that for high-profile influencers like Deepak Chopra, the skeptics will take their opportunity to dish out whatever they can.

And they did.

But before you watch Deepak’s angry response to these trolls, here is a selection of his answers from the AMA session, exactly as they appeared on Reddit:

How old were you when you decided that you will follow this career path? Also if you could go back 20 years would you do anything different?

“I was in medical school when I realized that the system I was training in was inadequate, but it took me many years of residency, fellowship, research and practice before I took the leap in my early 30s. Would I do anything different? Probably, because I do things differently everyday. But I’m not sure how exactly.”

What advice do you have for someone who wants to start meditating?

“Start with sitting quietly, and letting your mind settle into your breath for a few minutes and then increase the amount everyday. The Chopra Center also offers periodically 21 day lessons in mediation and during the time they’re being offered they are free of charge. You can also go to this website and look for a mediation teacher in your own area.”

How did you get started as an author, and how do you find inspiration to write so much? Do you make a practice out of writing every day, or do you wait for a specific project/idea to strike?

“I started writing as an author by writing the stories of my patients who made remarkable recoveries. They were teaching me things that I had not learned in medical school. My inspiration continues to be people who have achieved the extraordinary since we have the same brain as them I think we have the potential to be extraordinary.”

As a proponent of holistic medicine, are there situations where you would still recommend to a patient/client that they seek traditional medical treatment, and if so, what are some of those situations?

“I always recommend traditional medical treatment to anyone with acute medical illness. If you have a broken leg you need an orthopedic surgeon, and if you have pneumonia you need an antibiotic.

For lifestyle diseases such as coronary artery disease, inflammation in any form, and even other chronic illnesses – asthma, autoimmune illness and some types of cancer – I employ holistic methods and integrate them with traditional medical therapies.”

On the difference between spirituality and religion:

“With religion we usually mean affiliation to an ideology of the belief system. Most of our religions go back to the bronze age and do not satisfy the fundamental questions of existence to the modern mind; therefore, I feel that religion is cultural mythology.

Spirituality on the other hand can be described as self-awareness. The more you are aware of your own inner nature the more you discover that your innermost being is an aspect of a domain of awareness which is universal.

Getting in touch with that domain of awareness automatically produces in us divine feelings and attitudes such as love, compassion, joy, equanimity, insight, intuition, creativity, truth, goodness, beauty, harmony. Spirituality is the real religious experience.”

Why do you incorrectly use terms such as quantum, and do you really think quantum mechanics can be related to healing processes?

“In my opinion, and the opinion of many others I work with including physicists and neuroscientists, I do not use the word quantum inaccurately. A quantum is the smallest indivisible unit in which waves of energy are emitted or absorbed.

The sensations, images, feelings and thoughts in your consciousness, frequently called qualia, are actually space-time events — are quantum events, that translate into biological response. Depending on the nature of the event in consciousness, the biological response varies.

Fear creates its own response as do rage, jealousy, guilt, shame or their opposites such as love, compassion, joy and equanimity. Quantum physics has not been incorporated into mainstream biology, and therefore a lot of physicists entrenched in the material ontology take umbrage at my use of this terminology. Here are some reference articles that you can look at if you are interested.

As far as healing is concerned, we all have a healing system within us – it is the process of homeostasis, self-regulation, and self-repair. In fact, it goes into action every time you go to sleep or meditate.

On understanding the relationship between the quantum events in our consciousness and their biological responses in our body, we can facilitate the process of healing or self-regulation.

I’ve been talking about this for the last 30 years and finally some biologists and scientists are in agreement with what I am saying. My book, Super Brain, co-authored by Rudy Tanzi, Harvard neurologist and geneticist, is along these lines.”

Deepak Chopra’s Response to Trolls

“There was a fake Deepak_Chopra account commenting on this thread earlier, but it looks like it was removed. I recorded a response to some of his comments here:”

Questions we wish he answered:

  • What do you think is the best hard, empirical evidence that we do not live in a materialistic world?
  • Is there any empirical data that supports the efficacy of this kind of treatment and that can’t be ascribed to the placebo effect?
  • What are your thoughts on emotions and their connection to autoimmune disorders and cancer?

And one we’re glad he didn’t:

  • Deepak, would you rather fight one space-time quantum or one hundred quantum-sized space-times?
